  • Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has approved a massive increment in the monthly allowance of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state — raising their pay from ₦4,000 to as high as ₦50,000 depending on their area of service

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced a significant upward review of allowances for corps members serving across the state — an increase from the previous ₦4,000 to as much as ₦50,000 monthly.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday, November 7, by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku.

According to the statement, Governor Otti approved a base allowance of ₦20,000 for all corps members in Abia State. Those deployed to state government institutions will receive an additional ₦10,000, while those serving in schools and hospitals will earn a further ₦30,000, bringing their total monthly earnings to ₦50,000.

“In addition to the Federal Government’s increased monthly NYSC allowance of ₦77,000, all corps members serving in Abia State will now earn a base monthly allowance of ₦20,000, while those serving within state government establishments — specifically teaching and medical personnel — will earn an additional discriminatory allowance of ₦10,000 and ₦30,000, respectively,” Njoku said.

He explained that the governor’s decision is aimed at addressing human resource shortages in education and healthcare sectors, while encouraging young Nigerians to make meaningful contributions to Abia’s development.

Njoku added that the move underlines Governor Otti’s administration’s ongoing commitment to youth empowerment, capacity building, and infrastructure improvement within the state’s NYSC Orientation Camp.

“From renovating the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area to providing logistics, power supply, and better road access, the government has demonstrated genuine concern for the welfare of corps members,” he noted.

Njoku emphasized that the initiative goes beyond financial incentives — it forms part of a broader effort to create a conducive environment where corps members can serve, learn, and thrive while contributing to Abia State’s transformational goals.

“Governor Otti’s latest move sends a clear message: Abia is serious about empowering youth, rewarding excellence, and building a future where national service is truly valued,” Njoku added.
