Femi Falana has called the 2027 election campaigns “totally illegal”, urging INEC to enforce the Electoral Act.

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has condemned the ongoing political activities geared toward the 2027 general elections, describing them as “totally illegal” and “diversionary.”

Speaking during a Monday appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, the outspoken SAN said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must step in to enforce the Electoral Act, 2022, which he believes is being flouted.

“As far as the Electoral Act, 2022 is concerned, the ongoing election campaign is illegal. Totally illegal. It’s also diversionary. Because what Nigerians expect now, what the law provides is governance of the country without disruption,” Falana stated.

He warned that it is not yet time for campaigns and called on INEC to “draw the attention of politicians, including the government” to the rules guiding elections in Nigeria.

“Two years ahead of election. It’s not part of our law. If the people in power want to amend the law, that should be done. I will say that,” he added.

Falana also urged the media to play its part by shifting the focus away from “ethnicity, religion and other primordial considerations” and instead spotlighting the real issues affecting Nigerians.

“We must address the problems that are confronting our people. If you say you want to replace those who are in power, what is your solution? The electricity crisis, crisis in the education system, bad roads and other problems confronting Nigeria as a nation.”

He emphasized the need for those in power to consult with local governments and engage with the people directly, insisting that Nigeria must be governed by the rule of law.

“We must ensure that this country is run on the basis of rule of law. That’s not what is going on now,” he concluded.
