New National ID Card: The Federal Government introduces an enhanced ID card with integrated payment functionalities in collaboration with NIMC, CBN, and NIBSS, aiming to streamline identity verification and foster financial inclusion for Nigerians.

In a groundbreaking collaboration between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS), a cutting-edge identity solution with integrated payment functionality has been introduced for various social and financial services.

VerseNews gathered that this initiative will be powered by AfriGO, a National domestic card scheme aimed at revolutionizing digital transactions across Nigeria.

Enhanced National ID Card with Payment Features

The cornerstone of this initiative is the introduction of a next-generation National ID card embedded with advanced payment capabilities.

This multifaceted card, fortified with verifiable National Identity features, is firmly grounded in the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007. Mandated by this act, NIMC is empowered to enroll and issue General Multipurpose cards (GMPC) to both Nigerians and legal residents.

Addressing Societal and Financial Needs

According to Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, this innovative card is poised to meet a myriad of societal and financial demands. By providing physical identification, cardholders can seamlessly authenticate their identity and gain access to a plethora of government and private social services.

Moreover, this initiative is envisioned to foster financial inclusion, particularly for marginalized segments of the population, thereby empowering citizens and catalyzing their engagement in nation-building endeavors.

Eligibility and Card Features

The issuance of the enhanced National ID card is contingent upon registration with the National Identification Number (NIN), ensuring that only registered citizens and legal residents can avail themselves of this transformative solution.

The cards will adhere to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, ensuring interoperability and global compatibility.

Versatile Payment Functionality

In addition to serving as a robust form of identification, the enhanced National ID card doubles as a debit or prepaid card. By seamlessly linking the card to their preferred bank accounts, holders can effortlessly engage in financial transactions.

This functionality is particularly significant as it enables previously disenfranchised individuals to partake in various government intervention programs, thereby fostering greater socio-economic inclusion.

Commitment to Data Protection

NIMC reaffirms its commitment to upholding stringent data protection standards throughout the implementation of this initiative. Encouraging Nigerians to stay informed, NIMC urges citizens to visit their official website (www.nimc.gov.ng) for comprehensive information regarding the enhanced National ID card and its associated services.

Through this collaborative effort, the Federal Government aims to not only streamline identity verification processes but also catalyze financial empowerment and societal inclusion, thereby propelling Nigeria towards a more prosperous and equitable future.
