President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed the Federal Ministry of Education to establish guidelines to include graduates of the National Open University (NOUN) in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
VerseNews reports that the directive was announced during NOUN’s 13th convocation ceremony at the university’s Convocation Arena in Jabi, Abuja.
The President, represented by Biodun Saliu, Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), emphasized the government’s commitment to educational inclusivity and the importance of allowing NOUN graduates to participate in the NYSC scheme.
In a related announcement, Tinubu stated that the longstanding issue concerning NOUN law graduates’ admittance to the country’s law schools has been resolved. NOUN law graduates can now attend the Law School, ensuring equal opportunities in legal education.
The convocation highlighted the significance of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) in Nigeria’s educational landscape and the need to enhance ODL to broaden access to higher education across the nation.
Tinubu praised NOUN’s evolution from a platform designed for the working class to an institution that serves the broader educational needs of Nigeria’s youth.
Additionally, Tinubu revealed that within six months, NOUN would provide government officials access to enroll in ICT programs, particularly postgraduate courses at the African Centre of Excellence on Technology Enhanced Learning (ACETEL).
This Online News Platform gathered that the initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to improve decision-making and operational efficiency.
The President urged NOUN to admit qualified government functionaries into its postgraduate programs and tasked ACETEL, hosted by NOUN, with focusing on research to enhance ICT-based learning outcomes in Nigeria.
