Four traffic police officers in South Africa have been arrested over the killing of a 37-year-old Nigerian national, Osinakachukwu Marcus Onu, who was allegedly shot during a traffic operation on the N12 highway in Klerksdorp, North West Province.

According to a report by South African news outlet Independent Online (IOL), the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, December 17. The officers, aged between 25 and 36, were reportedly conducting a traffic operation when they allegedly pursued Onu, who was said to be legally resident in South Africa.

North West provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Adéle Myburgh, said Onu was shot at about 3am during the chase. His vehicle was later found stalled in the middle of the road on the opposite side of the N12 highway.

Police said officers responding to the scene discovered that the traffic officials involved had fled. However, preliminary investigations led Klerksdorp detectives to trace and arrest the suspects later the same day.

The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, adding to a growing number of reported cases involving the killing of Nigerian nationals in the country.
