Factional Labour Party leader Julius Abure has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent visit to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, clarifying that the meeting was a private engagement that was widely misunderstood.

Speaking at the factional National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday, Abure said his visit sparked “a lot of comments, a lot of misconceptions, and a lot of talk about the photographic events.”

“Last week, I met with the FCT minister, and it attracted a lot of comments… Now that we have the privilege of convening this meeting, it’s an opportunity for me to make a few brief remarks,” he stated.

Abure explained that living in Abuja naturally brings him into proximity with public officials, including the FCT Minister.

“I want to say, firstly and very clearly, that I am in Nigeria. I live in the FCT, and Nyesom Wike is the FCT minister,” he said.

Defending his right to meet with government officials, Abure added, “I have the right, as a Nigerian, to interface and interact with anybody—with any public officer in the federal government of Nigeria.”

He emphasized that the meeting with Wike was “privileged and purely a private meeting.”

Abure’s visit had drawn backlash from party members and supporters of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who viewed it as politically sensitive.
