BREAKING: President Tinubu Renames University of Maiduguri After Late Buhari
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The institution will now be known as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri.
The announcement was made on Thursday during an extended session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held at the State House, Abuja. The special session, convened in honour of the late statesman, was attended by current cabinet members and key figures from Buhari’s former administration.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82, served as Nigeria’s former military Head of State and later as a two-term democratically elected President. He is remembered for his austere leadership, principled governance, and resolute fight against corruption.
President Tinubu described the renaming of the university as a “fitting tribute” to a man who dedicated his life to national service.
“This is a leader whose life was defined by discipline, public service, and unwavering dedication to Nigeria,” Tinubu said. “Renaming this great institution in his honour is a reflection of his enduring impact on education, national security, and our collective identity.”
The decision also reflects Buhari’s historic connection to the region. He was the first military governor of the former North-Eastern State, with its administrative capital in Maiduguri—now the capital of Borno State.
The newly named Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, is expected to serve as a lasting monument to his legacy, particularly his influence on educational development and security in northern Nigeria.
The renaming comes amid a wave of tributes pouring in from across Nigeria and beyond, honouring the late president’s lifetime of public service and patriotism.
Buhari died at approximately 4:30 p.m. in London, surrounded by family, following a brief illness. Funeral arrangements and state honours are currently underway
