Court remands Emefiele in EFCC custody over fresh charges, adding to ongoing legal proceedings against the former CBN governor.
Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja ordered the remand of ex-Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele in EFCC custody until Thursday, pending a bail determination.
VerseNews reports that the decision came after Emefiele and co-defendant Herry Omoile pleaded not guilty to 26 new counts of abuse of office.
While Emefiele was remanded to EFCC custody, Omoile was remanded to the Nigerian Correctional Services. Emefiele’s defense lawyer sought bail on liberal terms, echoing conditions granted by another court, which was not opposed by the EFCC, emphasizing the necessity of their presence for trial.
The charges, filed on April 3, 2024, include allegations of gratification, fraudulent property receipts, and corrupt practices, adding to Emefiele’s ongoing prosecution in Abuja over financial misconduct during his CBN tenure.
