FG To Withdraw Firearms’ Charges Against Emefiele
The Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Abubakar, disclosed that a fresh 20 counts has been filed at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
There seems to be relief for the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, as the Federal Government has applied to withdraw the “illegal possession of firearms” case against the apex bank chief.
But, while the application is yet to be admitted by the Federal High Court in Lagos at resumed hearing on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Abubakar, disclosed that a fresh 20 counts has been filed at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
One of the counts, according to Abubakar, is the charge of “conferring unlawful advantages”.
However, counsel to Emefiele, Joseph Daudu, SAN, opposed the withdrawal of the application insisting that that the government must first purge itself of the disobedience of the court’s order granting Emefiele bail, before its application could be taken.
Justice Oweibo has adjourned till Thursday, August 17, 2023 to rule on the application.
