Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has arrived safely in Abuja after being evacuated from Guinea-Bissau amid a sudden military coup that plunged the country into political uncertainty.

Jonathan was airlifted out of the country following heightened tensions on Wednesday when Guinea-Bissau’s military leaders announced they had assumed full control of the government. The coup authorities immediately suspended all electoral activities and ordered the closure of national borders.

The former president had been in the country as part of a joint election observer mission deployed by the African Union (AU), ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) to monitor ongoing presidential and legislative elections. The unexpected takeover left Jonathan and other observers stranded as movements were restricted.

Military personnel later escorted the delegation to ensure their safe evacuation before conditions worsened. Jonathan eventually departed Guinea-Bissau and landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
