At least 12 persons have reportedly been killed, while three others were abducted after gunmen attacked miners in the Fan community of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack occurred around 9 p.m. on Tuesday while the victims were engaged in legal mining activities, according to reports. Five other miners sustained injuries during the assault and were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the attackers invaded the mining site in large numbers and opened fire on the miners, triggering panic and resulting in multiple casualties at the scene. Efforts are currently ongoing to rescue those abducted by the gunmen.

Following the incident, residents of the community have been thrown into fear and uncertainty, as the area has experienced repeated attacks linked to mining activities in the past.

Attempts to reach the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, Alabo Alfred, for comments on the incident were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

The latest attack comes months after a similar tragedy in September, when four miners lost their lives following the collapse of a mining pit in the Dura community of Jos South Local Government Area. That incident also occurred at night while the victims were working underground.

The recurring violence and accidents associated with mining activities have renewed concerns over safety and security in mining communities across Plateau State.
