The Nigerian senate president, Akpabio has reviewed the identity of suspects killers of soldiers in Delta.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has suggested that the perpetrators of soldiers in Delta State might be mercenaries rather than locals from the Niger Delta region.

Akpabio’s remarks came during a plenary session in Abuja where he emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the incident, cautioning against premature conclusions.

During a plenary session in Abuja on Tuesday, days after the incident, Akpabio, who presided over the session, suggested that those responsible for the attack in Delta State might be mercenaries. He made this assertion during a debate on two merged motions presented by Senators Abdulaziz Yar’Adua and Edeh Dafinone.

Akpabio intervened, urging caution in drawing conclusions, stating, “I don’t want you to conclude. I don’t believe these people are from the Niger Delta.”

He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to determine if the perpetrators were mercenaries from outside the Niger Delta. Akpabio doubted that such violence could originate from within the region, asserting, “I don’t think these people are Niger Deltans.”

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, visited President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, expressing concerns over potential reprisals and escalating tensions.

Following their meeting, Governor Oborevwori assured the public of measures taken to maintain peace and safety in affected communities, with President Tinubu pledging support for justice and condemning the cowardly act.

President Tinubu echoed the nation’s grief and extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice. He affirmed the military’s commitment to addressing the incident and ensuring that those responsible face the full consequences of their actions.

“As the Commander-in-Chief, I join all well-meaning Nigerians and the men and women of our armed forces to mourn and express my profound grief over the needless death of our gallant soldiers,” Tinubu said.

“I extend my profound condolences to the families of these fallen soldiers, their colleagues, and their loved ones. The military high command is already responding to this incident. The cowardly offenders responsible for this heinous crime will not go unpunished.”

In response to the tragedy, the Defence Headquarters on Monday on its X post released the names of the seventeen military personnel who lost their lives in the attack.
