The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially responded to widespread rumors alleging the cancellation of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
In a press release issued on Sunday, July 20, 2025, the council described the claims as false, misleading, and intended to cause public panic.
The council addressed a fake press statement that had been circulating on social media, which claimed the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, had cancelled the exams due to alleged widespread malpractice, question leaks, and digital breaches.

WAEC, however, firmly stated that “the said examination has not been cancelled.” The council clarified that marking of scripts has just been concluded and that results will be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025.
The council accused unnamed individuals of attempting to discredit WAEC by spreading the falsehood, calling them “mischief-makers bent on causing confusion and panic.”

“All press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council on behalf of the Head of National Office,” the statement emphasized.
WAEC also urged the public and all stakeholders to rely only on its official and verified social media handles and accredited media platforms for accurate information.

The release was signed by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria, on behalf of the Head of National Office.
“We therefore urge our stakeholders and the general public to disregard the said publication.”
