Ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria, First Daily has announced plans to conduct a nationwide online opinion poll to gauge public perception of former President Goodluck Jonathan — focusing on his eligibility and popularity as a potential candidate.
Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the publication, Daniel Iworiso-Marskson, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, revealing that the online poll will carry the banner: “2027: Should Goodluck Jonathan Run?”
According to Iworiso-Marskson, the initiative stems from First Daily’s belief that credible public opinion plays a crucial role in democratic consolidation and policy accountability.

Poll to Measure Jonathan’s Political Appeal
“By giving Nigerians the platform to express their views freely, the poll aims to provide an empirical reflection of how citizens perceive Jonathan’s possible return to the nation’s top office,” he said.
He explained that the project was inspired by the growing public debate surrounding Jonathan’s political future and rising calls for him to contest again in 2027.
“As an institution committed to data-driven journalism, we consider it a civic duty to create a transparent platform where Nigerians can voice their opinions on an issue with significant national implications,” Iworiso-Marskson stated.

Rising Speculation About Jonathan’s Comeback
Discussions about Jonathan’s potential return have been among the most debated issues in Nigerian political circles.
While some believe he remains a credible alternative who could stabilize Nigeria’s political scene, others suggest he should maintain his status as an elder statesman and mentor to younger leaders.
Iworiso-Marskson said the outcome of the survey would reveal both grassroots and elite acceptance levels of Jonathan across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.

“For Jonathan himself,” he added, “the poll’s result will act as an objective barometer of public sentiment, guiding his decision on whether to heed the growing calls for a comeback in 2027.”
Transparency and Nationwide Participation
The poll, according to the publisher, goes beyond Jonathan’s personal ambitions. It is also designed to empower Nigerians to shape the national political conversation ahead of the next general elections.
He emphasized that the process would be transparent, inclusive, and technology-driven, ensuring participation across all regions.

“The findings will be published in detail upon completion,” he said, “offering a credible reference point for political analysts, voters, and observers.”
Iworiso-Marskson concluded that the exercise underscores the power of public opinion in strengthening democratic accountability and guiding leadership choices in Nigeria’s evolving democracy.
