A report released on April 4, 2026, by an Independent Legal Documentation Unit has named Aloy Ejimakor as the most prominent lawyer in the legal defence of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The document, addressed to the public, media, and civil society, details what it described as a series of judicial, regional, and international legal victories secured on behalf of Kanu and IPOB.

According to the report, Ejimakor recorded six major favourable outcomes, including three domestic court judgments with a combined ₦9.5 billion in damages, one regional ruling, and two international advocacy successes. Among the highlighted cases is a January 2022 judgment by the Abia State High Court, where Justice Benson Anya declared the 2017 military operation at Kanu’s residence unlawful and awarded ₦1 billion in damages.

In October 2022, the Federal High Court in Umuahia ruled that Kanu’s rendition from Kenya was illegal, awarding ₦500 million and ordering the Federal Government to halt prosecution on that basis. Another ruling in October 2023 by the Federal High Court in Enugu declared IPOB’s proscription unconstitutional and awarded ₦8 billion in compensation.

The report also referenced regional intervention by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which issued interim measures in 2018 following a petition filed by Ejimakor, as well as international attention from the United Nations, including reports linked to former Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard. These interventions criticised actions taken against Kanu and IPOB, particularly during military operations and his subsequent arrest and rendition.

While acknowledging contributions from other members of Kanu’s legal team, including Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Mike Ozekhome, and Patrick Lumumba, the report maintained that none matched the scale of outcomes attributed to Ejimakor. It noted that some court rulings, including those involving financial compensation, have allegedly not been fully implemented by authorities, but stressed that they remain valid legal precedents.

The document concluded by calling on the legal community, civil society, and international organisations to recognise Ejimakor’s contributions, describing his work as significant in advancing human rights jurisprudence and reinforcing the rule of law in Nigeria and across Africa.
