The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has explained the meanings of the different admission statuses displayed to candidates on its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

The Board provided the clarification in an explainer video shared on Thursday, urging candidates to regularly check their CAPS for updates as institutions and JAMB complete the admission process.

According to JAMB, a “Not Admitted” status does not necessarily mean that a candidate will not eventually gain admission.

“This simply means you’ve not been offered admission yet. However, it does not necessarily mean you will not be admitted,” the Board explained.

What Does “Admission in Progress” Mean?

JAMB explained that “Admission in Progress” generally indicates that the admission process has advanced but has not yet been completed.

The Board said the status may appear when an institution has proposed a candidate for admission but is still awaiting the required approval.

“This means your institution’s admission officer has proposed you for admission, but awaiting the head of institution’s recommendation,” JAMB stated.

The status may also apply when the head of the institution has recommended a candidate but the admission is still awaiting JAMB’s approval or disapproval.

However, JAMB cautioned candidates against interpreting “Admission in Progress” as confirmation that admission has already been secured.

“Please note that ‘Admission in Progress’ does not mean automatic admission,” the Board warned.

It explained that an admission recommendation could still be rejected if the candidate fails to meet the required conditions.

“This is because the recommended offer could still be disapproved by the Board if you don’t meet the prerequisite requirements,” JAMB stated.

When Does CAPS Show “Admitted”?

According to JAMB, a candidate’s status changes to “Admitted” after the Board officially approves the admission offer.

“This is the point you get the message, ‘CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION’,” the Board explained.

Candidates who receive an official admission offer can then use CAPS to accept or reject the offer.

JAMB also reminded candidates that their CAPS status may change at different stages of the admission process.

“Remember, your CAPS status will keep changing as the admission process continues until the final stage where you print your admission letter,” the Board said.

Candidates were advised to continue monitoring their CAPS and rely on JAMB’s official communication channels for verified information about their admission status and the ongoing admission process.
