The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, says the ban on alcoholic drinks sold in sachets and small-volume bottles remains in force.

The ban affects alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small PET or glass bottles below 200ml.

NAFDAC said the policy is meant to protect public health, especially children, teenagers and young adults, from easy access to cheap, high-alcohol-content drinks.

Is sachet alcohol still banned in Nigeria?

Yes. NAFDAC has repeatedly stated that the ban on sachet alcohol and small bottles below 200ml has not been lifted.

The agency also denied reports claiming that the Federal Government had directed it to suspend enforcement of the ban.

According to NAFDAC, enforcement is targeted at the banned packaging sizes, not at shutting down alcohol-producing companies.

NAFDAC has not released a brand-by-brand public list of all affected products. Instead, the ban is based mainly on packaging size and product type.

The affected products include:

  1. Alcoholic drinks sold in sachets
  2. Spirit drinks packaged in sachets
  3. Alcoholic bitters sold in sachets
  4. Gin sold in sachets
  5. Vodka sold in sachets
  6. Brandy sold in sachets
  7. Rum sold in sachets
  8. Schnapps sold in sachets
  9. Herbal alcoholic mixtures sold in sachets
  10. Alcoholic drinks in PET bottles below 200ml
  11. Alcoholic drinks in glass bottles below 200ml
  12. Small-volume ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages below 200ml

In simple terms, if the product contains alcohol and is packaged in a sachet or very small bottle below 200ml, sellers should treat it as affected.

Products not affected by the ban

NAFDAC has clarified that it has not banned all alcohol.

The following are not the main target of the ban:

  • Alcoholic beverages in approved larger bottles
  • Alcohol in legal packaging above the banned small-volume size
  • Properly registered alcoholic products sold in approved pack sizes
  • Non-alcoholic drinks
  • Medicinal products not meant for drinking alcohol consumption

However, sellers should always check NAFDAC registration status, label details and pack size before stocking any regulated product.

Why NAFDAC banned sachet alcohol

NAFDAC said sachet alcohol and small bottle alcohol are easily accessible, cheap and easy to hide.

The agency said this makes them attractive to minors and other vulnerable groups.

NAFDAC also raised concerns about:

  • Underage drinking
  • Alcohol misuse among young people
  • Easy concealment in schools
  • Public safety risks
  • Abuse by some commercial drivers
  • High alcohol concentration in small packs

The agency described the policy as a public health measure, not a punishment against manufacturers.

What sellers should know

Retailers, wholesalers and distributors should take the ban seriously because enforcement is ongoing.

Sellers should do the following:

  1. Stop buying sachet alcoholic drinks.
  2. Stop displaying affected products publicly.
  3. Check pack sizes before restocking.
  4. Return banned stock to suppliers where possible.
  5. Keep receipts and supplier records.
  6. Avoid repackaging alcohol into smaller containers.
  7. Do not relabel banned products as herbal drinks.
  8. Confirm NAFDAC registration before selling alcohol.
  9. Cooperate with NAFDAC, NOA and FCCPC enforcement teams.
  10. Report suspicious or fake alcoholic products.

Can sellers still sell alcohol?

Yes. Sellers can still sell alcoholic beverages that are legally registered and packaged in approved sizes.

The ban does not mean alcohol business is illegal in Nigeria. It means alcohol in sachets and small-volume containers below 200ml is prohibited.

What happens if sellers ignore the ban?

Sellers who continue to stock or distribute affected products may face enforcement action.

Possible consequences include:

  • Seizure of banned products
  • Evacuation of affected stock
  • Regulatory sanctions
  • Shop or warehouse inspection
  • Further investigation by authorities

NAFDAC has also partnered with the National Orientation Agency and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to strengthen awareness and enforcement.
