That is why the selling rate is usually higher than the buying rate.

Why the black market rate is higher

The black market rate is higher than the official rate because of:

  • High demand for dollars
  • Limited access to official FX
  • Travel and school-fee demand
  • Import pressure
  • Speculation
  • Difference between bank rates and street rates

Is the naira improving?

For now, the naira is showing relative stability compared to earlier periods of sharp depreciation.

The gap between the official and black market rate is still present, but it is narrower than previous periods when the spread was much wider.

However, the naira can still move quickly depending on dollar supply, crude oil earnings, CBN policy, imports and market demand.

Important note

Exchange rates change several times in a day. Anyone buying or selling dollars should confirm the live rate from their bank, licensed BDC or trusted market source before making payment.
