Nigerians applying for United States tourist or business visas may now face an additional financial requirement under the US visa bond programme.

The rule affects applicants for B1/B2 visas, which are used for tourism, business visits, conferences, medical trips, family visits and other short-term travel to the United States.

According to the US Department of State, Nigeria is among the countries whose nationals may be required to post a visa bond before a B1/B2 visa is issued.

The current official bond amounts are $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000, depending on the decision made by the consular officer during the visa process.

However, a US regulatory agenda entry for the permanent visa bond programme states that consular officers may require covered applicants to post a bond of up to $20,000 as a condition of visa issuance.

This means Nigerian applicants should understand both the current active requirement and the possible higher cap under the permanent rule.

What Is A US Visa Bond?

A US visa bond is a refundable deposit required from some visa applicants before a visa is issued.

It is meant to serve as a guarantee that the traveller will obey the terms of the visa and leave the United States before the authorised stay expires.

The bond is not the same as the normal visa application fee.

The visa application fee is paid to apply for the visa. The visa bond is an additional amount that may be requested after the consular officer has reviewed the application.

Why Nigeria Is On The Visa Bond List

The US Department of State said the visa bond requirement applies to nationals of listed countries based on factors such as visitor visa overstay rates, screening concerns or other immigration-related considerations.

Nigeria was listed with an implementation date of January 21, 2026.

This means Nigerian passport holders applying for B1/B2 visas can be asked to post a bond if the consular officer decides it is required.

The rule applies regardless of where the Nigerian applies from.

For example, a Nigerian applying from Lagos, Abuja, Accra, London, Dubai or any other country may still be affected because the rule is based on nationality and passport, not only location of application.

How Much Can Nigerians Be Asked To Pay?

Under the current official visa bond list, covered applicants may be required to post one of three amounts:

  • $5,000
  • $10,000
  • $15,000

The exact amount is determined during the visa interview.

A regulatory filing for the permanent visa bond programme also states that consular officers may require covered B1/B2 applicants to post a bond of up to $20,000.

Because of this, Nigerians should watch for fresh official updates from the US Department of State before assuming the highest amount applies immediately in every case.

Does Paying The Bond Guarantee Visa Approval?

No.

A visa bond does not guarantee that a visa will be issued.

The US Department of State clearly states that applicants should post a bond only after a consular officer directs them to do so.

If an applicant pays money without official instruction, the payment may not be returned.

This is important because scammers may use the new rule to deceive people by claiming they can “process” visa bonds privately.

How To Pay The US Visa Bond

Applicants should not pay visa bond money to agents, consultants, travel companies, WhatsApp vendors or private websites.

The US government says applicants who are asked to post a bond will receive a direct instruction and payment link through the official US Treasury platform, Pay.gov.

The applicant must also submit DHS Form I-352, which is the immigration bond form.

The person who pays the bond is called the obligor, and that person is the one who will receive the refund if the bond conditions are not breached.

When Will The Bond Be Refunded?

The visa bond can be returned if the traveller obeys the visa conditions.

The bond may be cancelled and refunded if:

  • The traveller leaves the United States on or before the authorised departure date.
  • The traveller does not travel to the United States before the visa expires.
  • The traveller is denied admission at a US port of entry.

The refund will be made in US dollars.

This means the person who paid the bond carries any exchange rate risk. If the naira falls before the refund is made, the value may feel different when converted back to naira.

When Can The Bond Be Lost?

The bond may be forfeited if the traveller violates the visa conditions.

This may happen if:

  • The traveller overstays in the United States.
  • The traveller remains in the US after the authorised period.
  • The traveller changes or adjusts status in a way that breaches the bond terms.
  • The traveller fails to follow required entry or exit conditions.

The US government also says visa bond holders must enter and exit through approved commercial air ports of entry.

Who Is Most Likely To Be Affected?

Not every Nigerian B1/B2 applicant will automatically be asked to post a bond.

The decision is made by the consular officer after reviewing the applicant’s circumstances.

Applicants who may face closer questioning include those with weak travel history, unclear employment, weak financial records, no strong family or business ties, or previous immigration concerns.

However, even applicants with good documents should be prepared, because the final decision belongs to the consular officer.

What Nigerian Applicants Should Do Before Applying

Nigerian applicants should prepare stronger documentation before attending a US visa interview.

Useful documents may include:

  • Valid Nigerian passport
  • Employment letter or business registration documents
  • Bank statements
  • Evidence of income
  • Travel itinerary
  • Invitation letter, if applicable
  • Conference or business event details
  • School or family records showing ties to Nigeria
  • Previous travel history
  • Evidence of property, business or dependants in Nigeria

Applicants should also be ready to explain clearly why they are travelling, how long they will stay, who will fund the trip and why they will return to Nigeria.

Why This Matters For Nigerian Travellers

The visa bond rule could make US travel more expensive for many Nigerians.

A family of three or four travelling together could face a heavy financial burden if more than one person is asked to post a bond.

It could also affect students’ parents attending graduations, business owners attending conferences, families visiting relatives, and patients travelling for medical appointments.

Even though the bond may be refundable, applicants must first raise the money in dollars before the visa is issued.
