A humanoid robot reportedly malfunctioned during a demonstration at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing, China, after losing its remote connection.

Footage circulating online shows the robot on the exhibition floor, violently moving its arms and legs as operators rush in and attempt to restrain and shut down the machine.

The incident has sparked fresh conversations about the safety of increasingly advanced humanoid robots, particularly the importance of reliable control systems, fail-safe mechanisms and emergency shutdown features as robots become more capable and autonomous.

The 2026 World Robot Conference is being held in Beijing from August 19–23, bringing together companies and researchers to showcase advances in robotics, artificial intelligence and embodied intelligence.

The incident also comes just days before the second World Humanoid Robot Games, scheduled for August 22–26 in Beijing. Organisers say the competition will feature 2,056 robots from 666 teams across 16 countries, competing in sporting events and real-world scenarios designed to test their capabilities.

While robot malfunctions are not necessarily evidence that machines are becoming uncontrollable, incidents like this highlight an important challenge facing the industry: ensuring that increasingly powerful robots can be stopped quickly and safely when something goes wrong.
