The Senate has called for additional security personnel and more security camps along the borders of Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi states following the deadly attack on Binnari community in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba.

Lawmakers adopted the resolutions on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after Senator Shuaibu Isa Lau raised a motion of urgent national importance concerning the killings and displacement of residents.

The Senate also urged the National Emergency Management Agency and the North-East Development Commission to provide immediate relief to affected communities.

Casualty figures remain different across reports

During its deliberations, the Senate cited reports of approximately 80 deaths.

However, a preliminary assessment submitted by the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency to NEMA recorded 62 deaths and 52 injuries. The assessment also reported that 5,187 residents had been displaced.

These figures come from different accounts and should not be treated as a single, independently verified final toll. The higher number cited during the Senate debate has not been reconciled with the emergency-management assessment reviewed for this report.

Gunmen struck on community’s market day

The attack occurred on Friday, October 23, when traders and residents had gathered for Binnari’s weekly market.

Accounts from the community described gunmen arriving on motorcycles, opening fire, looting shops and setting property ablaze. Residents fled into surrounding areas as the violence spread.

Some people reportedly drowned while attempting to escape across a river. Searches for victims in nearby bushes and the river contributed to revisions of earlier casualty estimates.

The attack damaged livelihoods as well as homes, disrupting a market used by farmers and traders from neighbouring settlements.

Lawmakers seek sustained protection

Presenting the motion, Lau warned that recurring attacks were increasing fear, forcing residents from their homes and threatening community life.

He called for a stronger security presence around vulnerable border corridors to prevent further violence.

Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno supported the motion, stressing the government’s responsibility to protect lives and property.

The Senate subsequently urged security agencies to deploy additional personnel, establish more camps and strengthen surveillance. Lawmakers also observed a minute’s silence in honour of those killed.

Emergency agencies assess displaced residents’ needs

NEMA said it was working with the state emergency agency, local authorities and other stakeholders to assess humanitarian needs and coordinate assistance.

The preliminary assessment recorded 7,123 people affected overall, including those displaced. That figure describes the wider population affected by the incident and is separate from the casualty count.

The Senate’s resolutions call for security and humanitarian action; they do not establish that the proposed camps have already been built or that relief has reached every affected household. No completion timetable for the requested measures was specified in the parliamentary reports reviewed.
