  • Lagos State Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh has alleged that human rights activist Omoyele Sowore evaded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme — claiming the activist is unfit to criticise law enforcement and reaffirming his wanted status.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has accused human rights activist and Sahara Reporters founder, Omoyele Sowore, of evading the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, alleging that he never completed the mandatory national service.

Jimoh made the claim on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where he responded to Sowore’s earlier criticism of his competence and the police’s decision to declare him wanted.

“During his interview, he said the commissioner of police is not competent. I’m very competent; I’ve been here for more than nine months,” Jimoh said. “I want to make it abundantly clear that Sowore doesn’t have an NYSC certificate because of punitive reason.”

According to the police chief, Sowore was posted to Adamawa State for his service year but allegedly refused to participate.

“He was posted to Adamawa and he was evasive — he never did the service,” Jimoh added.

Jimoh further stated that Sowore was unqualified to criticise law enforcement or mobilise protests against the police.

“Such kind of person that’s not even qualified to bear the NYSC certificate of our great country Nigeria will now be calling out miscreants to come and disturb the peace of Lagos. We will not allow it. So, my pronouncement that he’s declared wanted still stands,” he said.

Earlier, the Lagos State Police Command had declared Sowore wanted over allegations that he was plotting to instigate public unrest in the state.

Reacting to the claim, Sowore dismissed the accusations, accusing the police commissioner of attempting to silence him and divert attention from the controversy surrounding the Oworonshoki demolitions — where police reportedly dispersed a planned community gathering.

Sowore also said that despite multiple attempts to reach Jimoh, the commissioner refused to take his calls, describing the move as a politically motivated witch-hunt meant to distract the public from police misconduct in Lagos.
