Anambra State experienced widespread disruption on Monday as businesses, schools and offices shut down during a sit-at-home linked to the detention of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, with analysts reporting high compliance across the state.

Economic and social activities were largely disrupted across Anambra State on Monday following a sit-at-home linked to the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Reports and visual materials shared by multiple media platforms, including Oriental Times, Igbere TV, Punch Newspapers, Sahara Reporters, Blueprint and AIT, showed largely deserted streets across major towns, with banks, schools, offices and markets closed for most of the day.

In a statement dated February 3, 2026, a public policy analyst based in Abuja, Barrister Christopher Chidera, described the development as a near-total shutdown of economic and social activities in Anambra and parts of the South-East. He said available evidence pointed to high levels of compliance with the sit-at-home directive.

Chidera also raised concerns over what he described as a late afternoon visit by Governor Chukwuma Soludo to a market in the state, which he said occurred between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. According to him, the visit appeared to be aimed at projecting normal commercial activity rather than reflecting the situation earlier in the day.

The analyst alleged that the market visit was stage-managed and involved hired supporters, adding that it did not represent genuine trading activity. He further claimed that significant resources may have been spent on logistics and media arrangements during the visit. These allegations have not been independently verified.

At the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Government had not issued an official response to the claims regarding the level of compliance with the sit-at-home or the circumstances surrounding the governor’s market visit.

Chidera maintained that video and photographic evidence circulating online contradicted claims that business activities had resumed normally during the day, insisting that public records showed widespread closure of markets and public spaces.
