The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has said the recent appeal filed by its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has placed Nigeria’s judiciary and political leadership under renewed public scrutiny, as the group linked his conviction to broader issues of injustice and worsening insecurity in the country.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, IPOB confirmed that Kanu formally filed his appeal at the Court of Appeal, Abuja, on February 4, 2026, challenging the judgment delivered by the Federal High Court. The group described the ruling as politically motivated and unjust, insisting that it failed to meet basic standards of fairness.

IPOB alleged that the trial court convicted Kanu without sufficient proof and raised concerns over his transfer to a correctional facility outside Abuja, arguing that the move has made access to legal representation and the pursuit of his appeal more difficult. The group said these actions undermined the principles of justice and due process.

The statement also drew attention to renewed attacks in parts of the South-West, where communities have recently come under assault by armed groups. IPOB argued that the spread of insecurity beyond the South-East reflects warnings previously made by Kanu about the consequences of injustice and selective enforcement of the law.

According to the group, jailing voices it described as critical of injustice has not improved national security, but rather coincided with the expansion of violence into new regions. IPOB questioned the gains made by the Federal Government in detaining Kanu while insecurity persists across the country.

The statement urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reassess the continued detention of the IPOB leader, describing his release as essential to restoring justice and stability. IPOB maintained that lasting peace in Nigeria would remain elusive without adherence to the rule of law.

The statement was signed by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful.
