- The Nigeria Revenue Service has unveiled new tax guidelines for cryptocurrency and other virtual assets, introducing rules on registration.

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has released comprehensive guidelines for the taxation of cryptocurrency and other virtual assets, introducing a formal tax framework for Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
The new regulations, announced on Monday, provide clear rules for the taxation of virtual asset transactions in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025, and the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025.
According to the NRS, the guidelines apply to taxpayers, Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs), Peer-to-Peer (P2P) marketplace operators, tax practitioners, investors, and individuals involved in cryptocurrency and other digital asset activities.
In a public notice, the agency said the guidelines establish a clear administrative framework covering tax obligations, registration requirements, reporting standards, record-keeping, valuation principles, and the tax treatment of virtual asset transactions.
“The Guidelines provide a clear administrative framework for the taxation of virtual assets in Nigeria. They set out the applicable tax obligations including registration, reporting and record-keeping obligations, valuation principles, and the tax treatment of virtual asset transactions,” the NRS stated.
The Service explained that the move is part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to modernise tax administration, improve transparency, and strengthen compliance as digital assets become an increasingly important part of Nigeria’s financial ecosystem.
It added that the new framework is designed to promote voluntary tax compliance while providing certainty and consistency for businesses and individuals operating in the cryptocurrency sector.
“The Guidelines are intended to promote voluntary compliance, enhance transparency, and support the development of a fair and efficient tax framework for digital asset transactions,” the agency said.
The NRS urged all affected stakeholders to study the guidelines and comply fully with their tax obligations, noting that the document is available for download on its official website.
The latest development marks another major step in Nigeria’s evolving approach to regulating cryptocurrencies and virtual assets. After years of restrictions and uncertainty surrounding digital currencies, the government has increasingly shifted toward creating structured legal and tax frameworks for the sector.
The guidelines also build on the recently enacted Nigeria Tax Act, 2025, and Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which introduced sweeping reforms aimed at improving tax administration, boosting government revenue, and providing greater regulatory certainty for businesses and investors in the country’s digital economy.
