Abia State Governor Alex Otti has visited the convicted Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

The governor made the visit on November 30, where he briefly met with Kanu behind closed doors.

According to Otti’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the governor used the opportunity to encourage Kanu to remain strong despite his conviction. Otti also assured him that the engagements he began over two years ago — engagements Kanu was already aware of — have been intensified.

The governor expressed confidence that the issues surrounding Kanu’s situation would be resolved “administratively,” adding that Kanu would eventually regain his freedom.

Ekeoma further quoted Otti as saying he was delighted that the Sultan of Sokoto shared the same view about the need for Kanu’s release and for reducing tensions.
According to him, the governor told Kanu:

“Governor Otti expressed joy that the Sultan of Sokoto is on the same page with him on the need for Kanu’s freedom and de-escalation of tension, and informed Mazi Kanu that the Sultan of Sokoto had, on a lighter note, told him that Kanu is now his subject and he was going to turban him.”
The remark reportedly made Kanu laugh heartily.

Kanu, who hails from Abia State, thanked Governor Otti for the visit and said he was not surprised, noting that Otti had shown similar concern in the past.

Kanu was described as smiling and in good spirits during the meeting. He commended the governor for the “giant strides” in Abia based on the reports he receives from home, comparing Otti’s achievements to those of the late Dee Sam Mbakwe of old Imo State. He urged the governor to continue delivering good governance.

Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel, was also present during the visit.
