Transparency International has once again ranked Nigeria among the world’s most corrupt countries, placing it as the 36th most corrupt nation in its 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI).

According to the latest report, Nigeria dropped from 140th position in 2024 to 142nd out of 182 countries assessed in 2025. Despite the decline, the country retained its status as the 36th most corrupt globally, sharing the ranking with Cameroon, Guatemala, Guinea, Kyrgyzstan, and Papua New Guinea. All six countries scored 26 points on the index.

The CPI, released on Tuesday, measures perceived levels of public-sector corruption on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 represents a highly corrupt country and 100 indicates a very clean one.

Explaining the findings, Transparency International’s Chief Executive Officer, Maíra Martini, said corruption continues to have severe consequences for ordinary citizens worldwide. She noted that corruption contributes to underfunded hospitals, poor infrastructure, weak flood defenses, and diminishing opportunities for young people.

Martini warned that corruption remains a global threat, stressing that even long-established democracies such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand have recorded declines in anti-corruption performance.

She urged global leaders to take decisive action against abuses of power and address factors driving corruption, including the erosion of democratic checks and balances.

Denmark topped the 2025 index as the least corrupt country, followed by Finland and Singapore, while Somalia and South Sudan ranked among the most corrupt nations globally.
