  • Coach Eric Chelle says the Super Eagles remain confident, with Samuel Chukwueze expected to step in for the suspended Atalanta winger.

Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman will miss Nigeria’s final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic on Tuesday after receiving his second yellow card of the qualifying campaign.

The Super Eagles winger was booked in the 64th minute during Friday’s 2–1 win over Lesotho, following an on-field retaliation incident spotted by Chadian referee Alhadi Allaou Mahamat.

Lookman had earlier been cautioned in the qualifier against South Africa last month, automatically ruling him out of the next fixture in line with CAF disciplinary regulations, which state that two yellow cards result in a one-match suspension.

Coach Eric Chelle, speaking after the victory, confirmed Lookman’s absence but downplayed concerns over his impact.

“The team remains focused and confident heading into the encounter,” Chelle said. “We have enough depth to compete effectively despite the setback.”

The Malian tactician substituted Lookman for Samuel Chukwueze in the 71st minute against Lesotho, and the AC Milan winger is expected to start in Cotonou as Nigeria faces a must-win match to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.

Chelle praised Lookman’s professionalism, adding that the Atalanta star would “still play a role from the sidelines, offering support and encouragement to his teammates.”

He emphasised the importance of maintaining concentration and taking chances in the decisive fixture:

“Every player must be mentally ready to contribute, whether starting or coming off the bench. We must take full control of our qualification destiny.”

Nigeria currently sits third in Group C, trailing Benin Republic and South Africa, despite the crucial win over Lesotho. The Super Eagles must secure maximum points on Tuesday to stay in contention for a 2026 World Cup spot hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
