Bayern Munich gives update on Xabi Alonso’s future following interest by Liverpool.
Bayern Munich Sporting Director, Max Eberl, has stated that the club has not communicated with Xabi Alonso regarding the possibility of him taking over as the new head coach after Thomas Tuchel leaves.
Xabi Alonso has remarkably transformed Bayer Leverkusen since joining the club in October 2022 despite the club’s initial struggles in a Bundesliga relegation battle.
They are currently leading the Bundesliga table by ten points and are poised to win their first-ever league title. Additionally, Bayer Leverkusen is the only team across Europe’s top five leagues to remain unbeaten in all competitions this season.
Following his achievements, it has attracted attention from top clubs.
According to reports monitored by VerseNews, he is reportedly at the top of Liverpool’s list of potential candidates to replace Jurgen Klopp, who is stepping down from his role at the end of the season.
Additionally, Bayern Munich is also interested in reuniting with Alonso.
Recent reports from Germany have indicated that Bayern Munich is ahead of Liverpool in the race to appoint Xabi Alonso as their new manager and have already initiated talks with the former midfielder.
However, Max Eberl denied these claims in an interview with Sky Sport Germany.
“Of course we want the new coach to be chosen as quickly as possible, but it has to be right, there won’t be a quick fix,” Eberl said.
“We have a list of priorities that we want to work through. But we still have one more season with Thomas Tuchel. We want to finish in the best possible way. That’s why I’ve often spoken about the balancing act and that’s what we have to do.
“It’s not my place to talk about other coaches. We have to keep our jobs and find out who is the right one. Then we have to see what it can cost and whether we can afford it. There are many facets that play a role when looking for a coach.
“We haven’t spoken to anyone yet. It will always be respectful because one or two candidates have another club, so it’s not that easy.”
It’s likely that there will be significant overlap between Bayern Munich and Liverpool’s shortlists for a new manager.
Roberto De Zerbi, the current manager of Brighton & Hove Albion, has also been linked with both positions, similar to Xabi Alonso.
