  • Forty-four serving federal lawmakers have jointly written President Bola Tinubu, urging him to invoke constitutional powers to release Nnamdi Kanu.

In a major push supporting the growing calls for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, 44 serving federal lawmakers from both northern and southern Nigeria have written a two-page letter and resolution to President Bola Tinubu.

In the letter, the lawmakers urged the President to exercise his constitutional authority to free Kanu from detention and to convene an all-inclusive political roundtable involving key stakeholders to address the country’s challenges through a political process.

The lawmakers, under the banner of “Concerned Federal Lawmakers,” also called on President Tinubu to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation to, “as soon as practicable,” discontinue the prosecution of Nnamdi Kanu in the interest of national unity and peace.

A portion of the letter read:
“Dear Mr. President, THE NATIONAL INTEREST DRIVEN RESOLUTION BY CONCERNED FEDERAL LAWMAKERS ON THE ISSUE OF MAZI NNAMDI KANU CONTINUED DETENTION.” It explained that after a closed-door strategic meeting and consultations across party lines and ethnic groups, the lawmakers were united by the need for national reconciliation and healing.

They noted the Federal Government’s history of negotiating with other agitating groups and referenced both domestic court rulings and international tribunal decisions that have favored Kanu.

The letter continued:
“We… hereby respectfully and earnestly request our dear President… to, as soon as practicable, direct the Attorney-General of the Federation to exercise his constitutional powers and discontinue the prosecution of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu; and to… initiate a constructive dialogue aimed at seeking a just political solution.”
