The Federal High Court in Abuja has set November 20 as the date to deliver judgement in the terrorism case against the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Justice James Omotosho announced the date on Friday, noting that Kanu had not opened his defence within the six days earlier allocated to him by the court.

According to the judge, the defendant’s failure to take advantage of the opportunity to present his case meant he could not later argue that he was denied fair hearing.

During the proceedings, Kanu filed a fresh motion urging the court to dismiss all charges against him. He argued that terrorism is no longer recognised as an offence under Nigerian law, insisting that the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, under which he is being tried, had been repealed.

Kanu contended that the repeal of the law invalidates the charges and therefore asked the court to strike out the case and order his immediate release.

However, Justice Omotosho declined to entertain the motion immediately and instead fixed November 20 for judgement.

Kanu, who remains in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), faces multiple charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, and incitement linked to his long-running campaign for Biafra’s independence.

The forthcoming ruling is expected to have wide political and legal implications, especially in southeastern Nigeria, where the case continues to generate intense debate and strong emotions.
