Donaldson Oladipo Diya, the Nigeria former Chief of the General Staff under military of state General Sani Abacha has been confirmed dead.

VerseNews Nigeria reports that according to the statement by his son, Oyesinmiola Diya, the former Chief died at the earlier hours of Sunday, March 26, 2023.

 “On behalf of the entire Diya family home and abroad; we announce the passing on to Glory of our dear husband, father, grandfather and brother, Lt- Gen. Donaldson Oladipo Oyeyinka Diya (Rtd).

“Our dear Daddy passed onto glory in the early hours of March 26, 2023. Please keep us in your prayers as we mourn his demise in this period,” he said.

He added that information relating to the burial of his late father will be officially announced.

Further announcements will be made public in due course,” he added.

What you should know

  • Diya was born in Odogbolu, Ogun State on April 3, 1944, he died eight days before his 79th birthday.
  • Diyawas a Nigerian general who served as Chief of the General Staff under military head of state General Sani Abacha from 1994 to 1997.
  • He served as Chief of Defence Staff and was Military Governor of Ogun State from January 1984 to August 1985
  • He was arrested for his treason  in 1997.
  • His Principal Staff Officer during this period was Bode George.
  • Upon trial in the court, he was found guilty and was sentenced to death but was pardoned by the late Head of State’s successor, Abdusalami Abubakar.
