A Lagos High Court has sentenced BRT driver Andrew Ominikoron to death by hanging for the rape and murder of 22-year-old Bamise Ayanwola.

A Lagos High Court has sentenced BRT driver Andrew Ominikoron to death by hanging for the rape and murder of 22-year-old Bamise Ayanwola.
The court found him guilty based on the “last seen” doctrine and the victim’s dying declaration.
The Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging for the murder of 22-year-old fashion designer Bamise Ayanwola.
Justice Sherifat Sonaike, delivering the judgment on Friday, ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court relied on the legal principle of “last seen” and the victim’s dying declaration to convict Ominikoron.
Ominikoron was arraigned on a five-count charge, including conspiracy to commit a felony, rape, murder, and sexual assault.

Bamise was last seen alive on February 26, 2022, after boarding a BRT bus at the Ajah area of Lagos, driven by the convict. Her mysterious disappearance triggered widespread public outrage and a frantic search across the state.
Tragically, her lifeless body was discovered nine days later on Carter Bridge in Lagos Island, confirming public fears and sparking renewed calls for accountability in the public transport system.
