Finidi George has been appointed as the head coach of the Super Eagles by the Nigeria Football Federation.

He succeeds José Santos Peseiro and will lead the team in crucial upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic.

George, a celebrated player from Nigeria’s ‘Golden Generation,’ faces the challenge of improving the team’s current third place standing in their group.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the appointment of Finidi George, a notable figure in Nigerian football, as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

VerseSports reports that the announcement came on Monday following the departure of José Santos Peseiro.

George, who previously served as an assistant to Peseiro and took on an interim role for two recent friendlies in Morocco, steps into the head coach position bolstered by a rich playing history.

He was part of Nigeria’s ‘Golden Generation,’ achieving significant success in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and making impactful appearances in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups.

Finidi George is now tasked with leading the team in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where they face critical matches against South Africa and Benin Republic.
