Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned his appointment with immediate effect. His resignation was conveyed in a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu and dated December 1.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development to Channels Television on Monday, noting that Badaru stepped down due to health-related concerns.

According to Onanuga, President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude to Badaru for his service to the nation. Sources within the Presidency also disclosed that the President is expected to forward the name of a new nominee to the Senate within the week.

In an official State House statement shared by Onanuga, the Presidency reiterated that Badaru’s resignation takes effect immediately.

Badaru Abubakar, 63, previously served as Governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023. President Tinubu appointed him Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.

His exit comes at a time when President Tinubu has declared a national security emergency, with further details on the government’s security strategy expected to be unveiled soon.
