Ambassador Umar Damagum has been unanimously confirmed as the substantive National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the party’s 2025 Elective National Convention held on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The ratification took place at the main bowl of the Lekan Salami Stadium, where thousands of delegates gathered to endorse the party’s new leadership structure.
The motion for Damagum’s confirmation was moved by the Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the PDP, Hon. Tony Abineri, who said he was speaking on behalf of the 3,000 accredited delegates present at the convention.

Abineri declared: “I move the motion for the ratification of Ambassador Umaru Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party. This is in accordance with Section 32 of the Constitution of the PDP as amended.”

Meanwhile, in a major disciplinary shake-up, the party expelled the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose; and suspended National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.
Their expulsion was also announced during the convention at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
According to VerseNews, the motion for their removal was moved by Olabode George, former National Vice Chairman (South) and one of the PDP’s most influential power brokers.

George said the party must take decisive action to restore discipline and unity in its ranks.
The motion was immediately seconded by Hon. Samaila Buga, Chairman of the PDP in Bauchi State, after which the convention overwhelmingly adopted it.
