Renowned Nigerian evangelist and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, Dr. Uma Ukpai, has passed away at the age of 80.
The influential preacher, often described as the father of Pentecostalism in Nigeria, died on October 6, according to a family statement released on Monday, October 10.
“A faithful soldier has been called to rest,” the statement read, describing Ukpai as a spiritual general whose six-decade ministry “impacted millions of lives and transformed destinies within Nigeria and across the globe.”

The family added that funeral arrangements would be announced soon.
Ukpai, who hailed from Ohafia in Abia State, lived most of his life in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he founded the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association and hosted weekly life-transforming services at the cathedral.
In January 2024, Ukpai turned 80, a milestone that drew massive celebration in Uyo. His followers reportedly gifted him ₦80 million, while Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno described him as “God’s gift to Akwa Ibom.”
The event also featured Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), who delivered the sermon. Adeboye recalled drawing strength from Ukpai during his “darkest moment” — the passing of his son in 2021.

“Dr. Uma Ukpai is extremely special to me,” Adeboye said. “If you see me kneeling down to worship before I preach, I know that if I follow the footsteps of a great man like that, I’ll be better for it. When I grow older, I want to be like Uma Ukpai.”

Born January 7, 1944, Ukpai’s ministry began in the 1970s and was instrumental in the rise of Pentecostal evangelism in Nigeria. Through nationwide crusades and faith conventions, he preached salvation, healing, and revival, influencing generations of pastors across denominations.
Over the decades, the evangelist worked alongside major Christian leaders such as Archbishop Benson Idahosa, William Kumuyi, and Enoch Adeboye, and was known for his fiery teaching style and emphasis on faith-driven transformation.

The family described him as “a loving husband, devoted father, and mentor to many,” adding that his life was a testament to God’s power and love.
“While we mourn his physical absence,” they said, “we rejoice that he has finished his race and is now resting in eternal praise.”
