Amidst the ongoing dispute between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, as well as the wave of resignations that have followed this crisis, the Rivers State Government has clarified that the governor did not exert any pressure on his commissioners to step down.

“Whatever their reason, I will like to say that the governor did not force, compel or ask anyone to leave,” the state’s Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, told Channels Television on Sunday.

“Those who left did so on their own volition, and according to their reasons.”

The governor’s decision to demolish the Rivers State Assembly Complex was based on the confirmation from a structural firm that the building was no longer habitable, according to the commissioner.

Johnson emphasized that even Wike himself acknowledged the unsuitability of the complex, highlighting the governor’s efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully due to his pacifist nature.

VerseNews understands that over the past three months, Rivers State has become a stage for absurdity, with the state House of Assembly becoming a battleground.

The conflict between Wike and Fubara has caused a division among lawmakers, resulting in 27 of them defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

It is worth noting that Wike currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the central government of the APC.

This feud has led to parallel sittings, an impeachment plot against the governor, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and numerous resignations of pro-Wike commissioners from Fubara’s cabinet.

Despite the intervention of President Bola Tinubu and other elder statesmen, there seems to be no resolution in sight for the political turmoil engulfing the oil-rich South-South state.
