Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, has come under renewed public scrutiny as fans in Uyo urged him to “calm down” ahead of Nigeria’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic on Tuesday.

The Chippa United goalkeeper has faced mounting criticism in recent weeks following a string of shaky performances in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

During last month’s qualifier against Zimbabwe in Uyo, Nwabali was booked after a reckless challenge that nearly earned him a red card. His temperament and decision-making have since become major talking points among supporters.

The spotlight intensified last week when Nigeria faced Lesotho. With the Super Eagles leading 2–0, Nwabali’s failed attempt to claim the ball gifted the Crocodiles a goal. Moments later, another error almost led to an equalizer, but the ball rolled narrowly wide.

As pressure mounts for him to be dropped before the final qualifier against Benin Republic, a video has gone viral showing supporters at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, shouting at Nwabali to “calm down” as the team arrived.

Nwabali, who became a national hero during AFCON 2023 for his penalty-saving heroics, will be hoping to silence his critics and rediscover top form when the Super Eagles face Benin Republic on Tuesday.
