- In a surprising shakeup ahead of AFCON 2025, Cameroon has omitted star players André Onana and Vincent Aboubakar from its final tournament squad, signalling a major shift in team direction.

In a decision that has sparked widespread debate across African football, the Cameroon national team has left out two of its most accomplished players, André Onana and Vincent Aboubakar, from the final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Football analyst Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on Monday, noting that both players were excluded from the list released ahead of the tournament in Morocco. “André Onana and Vincent Aboubakar have been left out of the Cameroon squad for the AFCON,” Romano wrote.

The omission represents a significant shakeup for the Indomitable Lions. Onana, a top-level goalkeeper with experience in major European leagues, and Aboubakar, the long-time captain and influential forward, have been central figures in the squad for years.

Their absence points to a fresh direction under Cameroon’s renewed technical leadership, with the final squad showcasing a noticeable generational shift. Several younger, less-established players have been included, suggesting a strategic move to rebuild and prepare for the future.
The development follows recent updates on Onana’s club career, including his loan switch to Turkish side Trabzonspor for the rest of the 2025–26 season.
