CAN Declares Nationwide Prayer Over ‘Christian Genocide’
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on churches nationwide to hold a one-day prayer session on December 7, 2025.
- The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on churches nationwide to hold a one-day prayer session on December 7, 2025, to pray against the ongoing targeted killings of Christians, citing the issue as a Christian genocide.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has directed churches across the country to observe a one-day nationwide prayer session next month in response to what it describes as the ongoing “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
In a circular dated Thursday and signed by CAN’s General Secretary, Samson Fatokun, pastors and church leaders were urged to set aside Sunday, December 7, 2025, for prayers against the targeted killings of Christians in the country.
The circular stated: “As part of the resolutions of the 4th Quarter Meeting of CAN National Executive Council held in Jos, Plateau State on the 18 November 2025, I am directed by the CAN President His Eminence, Archbishop (Dr.) Daniel C. Okoh, to inform all church leaders and pastors of the declaration/observance of a one-day nation-wide prayer against the ongoing Christian Genocide in the country. The prayer is scheduled to hold on Sunday 7th of December, 2025, in all Christian Church denominations in Nigeria.”

CAN outlined five key points for prayer: divine intervention to stop Christian killings, resettlement of displaced churchgoers, an end to terrorist activities, heavenly wisdom for political leaders, and restoration of peace across Nigeria.

The association has long been a vocal critic of attacks on Christians, particularly in northern Nigeria, and has consistently described the situation as a “Christian genocide.” In a statement last month, CAN highlighted its ongoing efforts to draw both national and international attention to the persecution of Christians, noting that it has engaged with global partners, corresponded with the International Criminal Court in The Hague, and hosted international Christian organizations including the World Evangelical Alliance and the Lausanne Movement.
According to CAN, these initiatives are part of a broader effort to address religiously motivated killings, safeguard affected communities, and seek global action to halt the continued violence against Christians in Nigeria.
