Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been stranded in Guinea-Bissau following a sudden military takeover that unfolded on Wednesday.

Jonathan had travelled to the country as part of an international observer mission monitoring the national elections. However, the political atmosphere shifted dramatically before he could return home.

According to reports, Jonathan is among hundreds of foreign visitors and election observers now stuck in the country. Many rushed to the airport upon learning of the coup, but all flights were grounded and land, air, and sea borders were swiftly shut by the military.

The crisis erupted after both leading presidential candidates — incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and opposition contender Fernando Dias — simultaneously declared victory, throwing the nation into confusion and heightening tensions.

Amid the political chaos, a group of senior military officers appeared on national television, announcing that they had taken “total control” of the government. Identifying themselves as the High Military Command for the Restoration of Order, they suspended the electoral process “until further notice” and imposed an overnight curfew, citing security concerns.
