Gunmen have reportedly kidnapped the deputy vice-chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU), Prof. Godwin Emezue, along with his wife.
VerseNews reports that the incident occurred at a filling station near Amachara in Umuahia South council area when the couple stopped to refill their tank.
According to an eyewitness account, Prof Emezue was whisked away by no fewer than three men that accosted him at the fuel station, dragged him into an already waiting Lexus SUV and collected his wife’s ATM card.
The wife was quoted as saying that the abductors of her husband sped off and raced towards the Imo-Abia border towards the Malaysian market.
Efforts to contact the police for confirmation were not successful as the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Moureen Chinaka, did not pick calls put across to her.
The Commissioner of Police Kenechukwu Onwuemelie did also not pick calls put across to him.
Kidnapping and other violent crime have been on the decline in the state in the recent times following the successful launch of Operation Crush by the State Government.
