  • U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has warned that he will publicly name Nigerian officials allegedly complicit in attacks on Christians, as part of renewed calls to designate Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern over religious persecution.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has issued a stern warning to Nigerian political figures accused of enabling or participating in violence against Christian communities.

The Texas lawmaker made this known on Tuesday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, declaring that he is prepared to publicly identify individuals he believes bear responsibility for the attacks.

According to Cruz, the move is part of a broader push to ensure accountability for what he described as “systematic and targeted persecution” of Christians in Nigeria.

The senator, a long-time advocate for religious freedom, also revealed that he is backing new measures to have Nigeria reinstated on the U.S. State Department’s Country of Particular Concern (CPC) list — a designation that could expose officials to sanctions.

He referenced earlier actions by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who first placed Nigeria on the CPC list over reports of widespread religious attacks and government inaction.

“I’ve been pushing legislation to designate Nigeria a CPC and to impose sanctions on the officials responsible,” Cruz said.

“Thank you to President Trump for his leadership in imposing the designation and for fighting to stop the murder of Christians in Nigeria. Now we must take the next step and hold Nigerian officials accountable.”

The Nigerian government has consistently denied claims of religious persecution, maintaining that ongoing violence in parts of the country stems from criminality and insurgency, not faith-based targeting.

Cruz, however, insisted that the time for general statements has passed, adding that he intends to “be very explicit” in identifying those involved in the coming days and weeks.
