The 2023 Global Terrorisms Index (GTI) report has ranked the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) the 10th most deadliest terrorist among the 20 deadliest terrorist in the world.
VerseNews Nigeria learnt that The GTI report is produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) using data from Terrorism Tracker and other sources.
Terrorism Tracker provides event records on terrorist attacks since 1 January 2007. The dataset contains almost 66,000 terrorist incidents for the period 2007 to 2022.
In the tenth edition (2023 edition) of the GTI report released on Tuesday March 14, 2022, IPOB recorded the highest number of attacks and deaths in 2022.

The read reads; “The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), designated as a terrorist group by the Nigerian government in 2017, recorded their deadliest year in 2022. They were responsible for 40 attacks and 57 deaths in 2022, an increase from 26 attacks and 34 deaths the year prior.”

IPOB is a nationalist separatist group in Nigeria that fights to restore the Republic of Biafra terminated by the Igbos from the South-East and some part of the South-South in Nigeria.
Its leader, Nnamdi Kanu is currently facing charges on terrorism and treasonable felony and has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS).
