The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the dates for the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.
VerseNews reports that according to a statement by the Chairman of the INEC Voter Committee, Sam Olumekun, the Edo state governorship election will be held on September 21, 2024, while the Ondo state governorship election is scheduled for November 16, 2024.
INEC’s decision is in compliance with the provisions of Section 178(2) of the Nigerian Constitution, which mandates that such elections be held not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the tenure of the last officeholder.
Additionally, Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, requires the Commission to publish a notice for the election not later than 360 days before the date of the election.

The statement also outlined the timeline for key activities leading up to the elections, including party primaries, candidate nominations, publication of candidate lists, and campaign periods.
For the Edo state election, party primaries will take place from February 1-24, 2024, while the Ondo state primaries are scheduled for April 6-27, 2024.
The final list of candidates for Edo will be published on April 23, 2024, with the campaign period beginning on April 24, 2024. For Ondo, the final candidate list will be published on June 18, 2024, and the campaign period will start on June 19, 2024.
