- The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered another setback as Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving the opposition party with just eight governors nationwide.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been thrown into another round of political turbulence following the high-profile defections of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The latest moves have reduced the number of PDP-controlled states from 11 to 8, signaling a deepening internal crisis within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to VerseNews, the APC now controls 26 states, while the PDP has only eight governors left. The Labour Party (LP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) each govern one state.

How It Happened
Peter Mbah made his defection public in Enugu on Tuesday, an event swiftly celebrated by APC leaders. Barely 24 hours later, Douye Diri confirmed his move in Yenagoa, citing “obvious reasons” for leaving the PDP and aligning with the ruling party.
Both defections, observers note, mark a significant realignment of political power in Nigeria’s South-East and South-South regions.

After the exit of Mbah and Diri, the remaining PDP governors are:
State | Governor | Geo-Political Zone |
---|---|---|
Adamawa | Ahmadu Fintiri | North-East |
Bauchi | Bala Mohammed | North-East |
Plateau | Caleb Mutfwang | North-Central |
Taraba | Agbu Kefas | North-Central |
Zamfara | Dauda Lawal | North-West |
Oyo | Seyi Makinde | South-West |
Rivers | Siminalayi Fubara | South-South |
Osun | Ademola Adeleke | South-West |
While some reports suggest that Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas and others may also be considering defection, no official statements have been made.
Bala Mohammed Speaks on the Crisis
Speaking in Abuja, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed — who also chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum — described the situation as troubling but assured that efforts are ongoing to rebuild unity ahead of the PDP National Convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan.

“If you ask me whether I am concerned about our governors leaving for APC, I am more than concerned. But leadership is a burden. As a leader of equals, I cannot dictate their decisions. Still, a lot of work is being done behind the scenes,” Mohammed said.

PDP Battles for Relevance Ahead of 2027
The latest defections highlight growing instability within the PDP, which once dominated Nigeria’s political scene. As the APC consolidates its control of 26 states, analysts say the opposition faces an uphill task to regain public confidence before the 2027 presidential election.
Political watchers believe the upcoming National Convention in Ibadan will determine whether the PDP can rebuild its internal structure or continue its downward spiral.
