- Police in Rivers State have arrested a 45-year-old man who allegedly stabbed a woman after she turned down his marriage proposal, an incident that sparked outrage after a video of the assault went viral online.
The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a man identified as Abi Baragon, who allegedly attempted to murder a woman for rejecting his marriage proposal.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the suspect, who had been on the run since June 2025, was apprehended on October 13, 2025, after months of manhunt by police operatives.
The case gained public attention after a viral video surfaced on June 20, 2025, showing a distraught woman crying after being violently attacked by a man, later identified as the suspect.

Iringe-Koko explained that officers attached to the Human Rights Department at the State Headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, launched an immediate investigation using intelligence-led policing and technical tracking to locate and arrest Baragon.
“It was alleged that the suspect’s motive for the assault stemmed from the victim’s rejection of his marriage overtures, prompted by her discovery that the suspect was already married with four children, an allegation he denied,” the police spokesperson said.
