- Manchester United have confirmed the dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim, less than two seasons after his appointment, following growing concerns over performances and internal tensions at the club.

Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim, the club confirmed in a statement released on Monday, January 5, 2026.
The Portuguese coach, who was appointed in November 2024, was relieved of his duties amid mounting dissatisfaction with the team’s performances and reports of internal disagreements at Old Trafford. At the time of his dismissal, United were sixth in the Premier League standings.
Amorim’s exit reportedly came less than 24 hours after he publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy during a post-match press conference following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United. His comments were said to have exposed tensions within the club’s leadership structure and intensified pressure on his position.
Sources close to the club indicated that Manchester United’s hierarchy moved swiftly after the controversial remarks, bringing an abrupt end to Amorim’s tenure less than two years into his spell as head coach.
In an official statement, the club said Amorim had departed his role with immediate effect.
“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United,” the statement read.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May. With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change to give the team the best opportunity of achieving the highest possible league finish.”

The club thanked Amorim for his contributions and wished him well in his future endeavours.
Manchester United also confirmed that former club star Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team for their next Premier League fixture against Burnley on Wednesday, as the club begins the process of appointing an interim manager and identifying a permanent replacement.
Further details are expected to emerge as the club prepares for its upcoming matches.
