- The National Examinations Council (NECO) has launched a new SSCE Centre in London, United Kingdom, aimed at providing Nigerian students abroad with credible, accessible examinations and qualifications recognized globally.
Determined to expand its global presence, the National Examinations Council (NECO) has established a new examination centre in London, United Kingdom.
The Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, unveiled the centre in partnership with Barnfield Education Ltd (BEP Education). He explained that the NECO SSCE Centre represents a strategic location for expanding access to education for Nigerians in the diaspora.
Speaking at the “Education Matters Conference UK 2025”, Prof. Wushishi stated that the centre will create opportunities for Nigerian students and adult learners in the UK who have been unable to complete secondary education or obtain equivalent qualifications. “Our objective is to provide credible and accessible examination opportunities for Nigerians residing abroad in line with the federal government’s education policy on inclusivity and global engagement,” he said.

Prof. Wushishi highlighted that NECO SSCE is already administered in seven countries, including Saudi Arabia, with new centres awaiting accreditation in Egypt and Burkina Faso. He also noted the Council’s commitment to full migration to Computer-Based Examination (CBE) as a key strategic goal for its evolution into a world-class assessment body.
He added that the NECO SSCE certificate is recognized by prestigious UK institutions such as Birmingham City University and Leeds Trinity University, and widely accepted in countries including the USA, Canada, India, China, and Russia.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, praised the initiative, emphasizing that the federal government aims to serve every Nigerian child, including those in the diaspora. “Every Nigerian student deserves an education that enables them to compete and thrive globally,” he said, calling the centre a vital step toward making Nigerian education universally respected.
Dr. John Ibanga, Director of BEP Education, noted that many Nigerian children in the UK face challenges within the British education system, particularly those unable to meet GCSE requirements. The NECO SSCE Centre provides an alternative pathway, offering recognized qualifications for further education and vocational advancement.

The NECO delegation also visited the Nigeria High Commission in London, where the initiative was commended as a timely and commendable effort aligned with Nigeria’s policy on educational inclusivity and diaspora engagement. Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, Head of Political Affairs at the Mission, assured NECO of the High Commission’s collaboration to advance Nigeria’s educational and developmental objectives in the UK.
Prof. Wushishi emphasized that the centre empowers the diaspora, strengthens national pride, and enhances Nigeria’s global standing while creating economic and social benefits. He encouraged Nigerians in the UK to take advantage of the new examination centre and leverage the opportunity to pursue academic and career advancement.
